Indoor Vs Outdoor Interlocking Sports Tiles: What Changes
The same click-fit polypropylene panel can serve a school hall and an open yard, but the specification around it changes. This guide separates what stays the same from what needs extra attention outdoors.
- Same modular panel system
- UV and temperature
- Drainage and base
- Grip, acoustics, upkeep
Sun, UV and temperature range
Outdoor panels need UV stabilisation to resist fading and surface chalking, and they must hold their dimensions through both summer heat and winter cold. Indoor halls avoid solar load but can still see temperature swings in unheated buildings. See UV durability notes and cold-climate notes.
Drainage and base preparation
Perforated panels let rain pass through the joints, so the slab beneath must have a fall and a working drainage path. Indoors the concern is instead a flat, dry, level base with no rising damp. The drainage guide and subbase guide cover both cases.
Grip, ball response and acoustics
Outdoor surfaces are specified for wet-weather grip and quick return to play, while indoor halls add concerns about ball bounce consistency and the hollow sound a suspended panel can make. Sample panels should be tested with the shoes and balls actually used at the venue. See shock absorption and safety.
Maintenance and service life
Outdoor courts collect leaves, sand and dust in the joints; a periodic sweep and occasional rinse keep drainage open. Indoors, the priority is checking edge ramps and replacing any single damaged tile promptly. Both are covered in seasonal maintenance and the edge ramp guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can the same tile be used indoors and outdoors?
Yes. The panel system is the same; outdoor projects add UV, drainage and thermal movement requirements to the specification.
Does rain pass through the tiles?
Water drains through the perforations and joints, which is why the underlying slab still needs a fall and a working drainage path.
Will an outdoor court fade in strong sun?
UV-stabilised virgin PP is formulated to resist fading and chalking; ask for the UV durability test report when comparing offers.
How do I clean the joints?
Sweep regularly and rinse occasionally so leaves and sand do not block drainage; no coatings or resealing are required.
